A letter to Armin — 08-05-23

Standard

Dear Armin,

Thanks for Armin’s warm heart!

These days, at first, I followed every scene in news. Sadness, shock were the very feeling. Tens of thousands of people were buried alive in seconds… Nightmares were the only themes of my sleep on these days. Following a friend’s advice, I went to the downtown to accompany one friend who had his business trip in this city to relieve myself. I feel more calm now.

On the time of 14:28 of day 19th, all the Chinese citizens stood in silent tribute to mourn for the victims in earthquake. I was in Shanghai Museum at that time. All the visitors and workers gathered in the central hall of this building. With the sound of air-raid alarm, all people stopped their own business and saluted. All the people in subway, all the people in the square, all the people in my lab stood and stilled…My friends in these situations told me their experiences, silence, solemn and respectful. I felt the same.

In one textbook of my primary school, there was a text named “who are the most lovely people”, which is mainly about the stroies of Chinese soldiers in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea around 1950. At that age, I coundn’t follow the meaning of that text. I learnt they loved their country and acted bravely in battles. Now, with the reports of armies in disaster area, I think they are the most lovely people in peace era. With the order, they walked in dangerous mountains in aftershocks to the center of earthquake, they parachuted into the unfamiliar badly destroied area in bad weather condition, they rescued the buried people sleeplessly, they fought with the local people. Maybe Armin think they are from the propaganda, but, with the experiences of my friends who once were soldiers, I surely believe they are the most lovely people.

Volunteer is the other troop in Sichuan. I do have one friend named Subei who volunteered to maintain the mobile affairs there. I phoned him and told him I was so proud of him. The volunteers from Tangshan city, which suffered the other violent earthquake in PRC’s history on 28th, July 1976,  moved me so much. Some of them lost their relatives and got help from the whole country at that time. They show their thanksgiving this time. They are lovely.

The torch relay started again after three days of national memorial. It will come to my campus tomorrow for one-hour-relay. It is the first time passing in a university. We are going to show our warm welcome to Beijing 2008.

Thanks to Armin again for your will of help. You are the lovely friend of me and our Chinese people! If there are some activies in Berlin for Sichuan earthquake or Beijing Olympic Games, I will be extremely grateful to you for your support to them.

Greetings!

David
